Manufacturers’ News, Inc. — For the first time in thirteen years, New Jersey gained manufacturing jobs, reports the 2014 New Jersey Manufacturers Register®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI in 2013, New Jersey posted a half percent gain in manufacturing employment, or 2,674 jobs, the first annual increase the industrial publisher recorded for the state since 2000.

Manufacturers’ News reports New Jersey is now home to 9,363 manufacturers employing 401,670 workers.

MNI reports the chemicals industry in New Jersey accounts for the most manufacturing employment, with 78,193 jobs, up 5.4% in 2013. Other gains included transportation equipment, up 3.3%; rubber/plastics, up 1.6%; and food products, up 1.2%.

“New Jersey’s industrial sector has long suffered from high business costs and global competition. Its top-notch workforce combined with the state’s investment in biotechnology will hopefully continue to support this upward trend,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company.

Losses were reported in lumber/wood, down 5.8%; stone/clay/glass, down 3.8%; and furniture/fixtures, down 3%.

MNI reports manufacturing employment in Newark increased 5.2% in 2013. Industrial jobs in Piscataway increased 3.6% and 3.1% in Parsippany. A loss of 5.5% was recorded for Princeton, while jobs remained unchanged in Moorestown.

Manufacturing companies expanding in New Jersey included Amneal Pharmaceuticals’; Silvi Concrete; and fragrance maker Shiseido America.
