Christopher L. Smith, who is retires next month as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief information officer is taking up new duties as U.S. federal chief technology and innovation officer for Accenture Federal Services, officials at Accenture announced today.
Smith will assume the new position on April 9, following his April 7 retirement from USDA, where he served as CIO since 2009.
Smith is credited for leading one of the largest federal government migrations to cloud computing and large-scale data consolidation efforts.
Smith’s federal government experience includes senior positions with the General Services Administration and the Internal Revenue Service. He also served 25 years with the Air National Guard. Smith was named Federal CIO of the Year in 2011 by Government Executive magazine and selected as a Federal 100 honoree by Federal Computer Week magazine in 2012 and 2011.
Smith will report to Kay Kapoor, who leads Accenture’s federal business, and be responsible for developing the technology agenda for the company’s federal business and overseeing services provided to federal clients in strategic areas such as secure cloud computing, big data, logistics and supply chain and cost reduction, according to an Accenture press release.
Smith served as co-chair of the Best Practices Committee for the Federal CIO Council and as government chair of the American Council for Technology/Industry Advisory Council’s Executive Leadership Conference.
