Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Manufacturing employment in California increased one percent over the past year, reports the 2014 Directory of California Manufacturers ®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, California manufacturers added 13,084 jobs from February 2013 to February 2014.

Manufacturers’ News reports California is now home to 25,237 manufacturers employing 1,539,131 workers.

According to the database of manufacturers, job gains were led by industrial machinery, up 2%. Industrial machinery ranks second in the state for industrial employment with 174,031 jobs. First-ranked electronics manufacturing declined 1.7%, currently employing 248,545.

“Though faced with high business costs, manufacturers in California are making large strides across many sectors,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state’s investments in technology and innovation will hopefully continue to support this upward trend.”

Industrial sectors adding jobs in California included instruments/related products, up 3.1%; chemicals, up 2.9%; and transportation equipment, up 1.8%. Losses were reported in textiles/apparel, down 2%; paper products, down 1.6%; and lumber/wood, down 1.5%.

Manufacturing companies in Los Angeles employ 78,886 workers, down one percent. Jobs in San Diego remained steady, increased 1.6% in San Jose; and rose 6.7% in Irvine. Manufacturing jobs in Santa Clara rose 2.3%, according to MNI.
