Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– New Mexico gained manufacturing jobs in 2013, reports the 2014 New Mexico Manufacturers Register^®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI in 2013, New Mexico posted a 1.2% increase in manufacturing employment, or 699 jobs, the largest post-recession gain MNI has recorded for the state.

Manufacturers’ News reports New Mexico is now home to 2,108 manufacturers employing 54,538 workers.

Oil and gas extraction is New Mexico’s top industry by employment, with 9,286 jobs, a 7.3% increase over last year. Second-ranked electronics accounts 6,902 jobs, up 3.9%. Other gains were seen in transportation equipment, up 13.1%; rubber/plastics, up 8.4%; and chemicals, up 7.9%.

“New Mexico continues to slowly climb back from the recession,” says Tom Dubin, President of the 102-year-old publishing company. “Its low business costs, zero corporate tax for manufacturers, and abundant natural resources are a draw for many companies.”

MNI reports manufacturing companies in Albuquerque employ 13,399, virtually unchanged in 2013. Industrial jobs in Hobbs increased 5.6%, and a half percent in Farmington. A loss of 3.6% was recorded for Carlsbad, while jobs remained unchanged in Rio Rancho.

The database of manufacturers reports industrial jobs in New Mexico’s Southeast region rose 5.6% and increased 2.1% in the Northeast.

Industrial companies expanding in New Mexico included Southwest Cheese; Leprino Foods; and Praxair.
