Manufacturers’ News, Inc./– For a second straight year, manufacturing employment in Virginia posted a gain, reports the 2014 Virginia Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial directory and database published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, manufacturers in Virginia added 3,001 jobs from Nov. 2012 to Nov. 2013, or about one percent.
Manufacturers’ News reports Virginia is now home to 6,346 manufacturers employing 332,789 workers.
“With its educated workforce and access to capital, manufacturers in Virginia continue to make gains, particularly in the transportation sector,” says Tom Dubin, President of the 102-year old industrial publisher.
According to MNI, employment in transportation equipment climbed 14% in Virginia over the year. Transportation equipment ranks first in the state for industrial employment, employing 42,527, and is expected to keep growing with Kilgour Industries’ plans to establish a plant in Martinsville and the planned opening of a Tanom Motors site in Culpeper.

Sectors reporting gains included chemicals, up 2.1%; and rubber/plastics, up 1.4%. Losses were seen in furniture/fixtures, down 8%; electronics down 6.2%; and primary metals, down 4.5%.
Newport News is the state’s top city for manufacturing employment, accounting for 28,228 jobs, up 11%. Richmond ranks second with 27,621 jobs, down 1.5% over the year. Roanoke is home to 10,553 industrial jobs, up a half percent, while fourth-ranked Lynchburg accounts for 10,001 industrial jobs, up 1% over the past twelve months.
