I have talked about Recorded Future in several of my data stories published on Breaking Gov and how they mine more than 25,000 Internet sources and are backed by the CIA and Google.

Chris Holden, Community Manager for Recorded Future, and I met recently to talk about how we could mine and visualize people’s quotes about the debt ceiling debate so much in the news and on people’s minds right now. The initial result is shown above.

The Recorded Future technology doesn’t currently allow embedding of this view in this article but the view will update if you go to their Web page and refresh the page periodically.

Now some explanation of what you are seeing:

The graphic at the top shows individual events plotted as gray circles and their “Momentum” shown as a blue line – shaded are. An accompanying table shows the “Event” details (214) from July 18th when Recorded Future started tracking to August 7th based on the time period referred to in the most futurist event. The reader should scroll down to those future events to see what Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner and others are saying.

Now both of these (“Momentum” graphic and “Event” details) will change going forward in time and their interpretation requires some explanation of terminology and the legend.

Momentum (blue) refers to positive (green) and negative (red) “Sentiment” and right now all the events are labeled as positive (green) – even though the current political climate and mood of the country seems very negative.

In addition, on can click on the individual “Entities” like Barack Obama (eight as of this writing) and isolate those events in the graphic and event list. Finally, one can mouse-over an individual event circle in the Graphic and the details of that event will pop-up to read the details.

More on this as the number of events increases and we get closer to the August 2 deadline for default unless the debt ceiling is raised.
