Delawareans and frequent visitors to the First State can now report illegal dumping activities directly to state environmental officials using their smartphones. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has launched a new TrashStoppers app for Android, iPhone, and Windows phones. The app was developed for DNREC by Delaware Interactive, LLC (DI) as part of the state’s ongoing eGovernment initiative.

The DNREC TrashStoppers app lets users provide tips to DNREC on illegal dumping of trash, tires, construction debris and other environmentally hazardous materials. Users can submit location information, descriptions of dumping they’ve seen and the people doing the dumping, motor vehicle information and photographs of the scene. Users can also make anonymous submissions if they wish. All illegal waste dumping tips are passed directly to the DNREC team for assessment.

“The TrashStoppers program over the last five years has proven to be a strong deterrent against illegal dumping of garbage, debris and hazardous waste in Delaware,” said DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara. “With this TrashStopppers app, we make it easier for Delawareans to report illegal dumping, and for us to catch the perpetrators and clean up the environment.”

The TrashStoppers app was developed as part of a statewide drive, led by the Delaware Government Information Center (GIC), to provide enhanced access to government services using the internet and modern communications tools. Delaware Interactive works closely with the GIC to provide eGovernment services in response to Governor Jack Markell’s directive to find ways to make government more efficient, effective, and open.
