Manufacturers’ News, Inc./– For a third straight year, Maine manufacturing jobs declined, reports the 2014 Maine Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory and database published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, manufacturers in Maine cut 726 jobs from Dec. 2012 to Dec. 2013, or about 1.1%, a smaller decline than reported in previous surveys.
MNI reported industrial jobs in Maine dropped 1.4% in 2012 and 1.8% in 2011. The state is currently home to 2,172 manufacturers employing 64,110 workers.
“Although manufacturers in Maine have yet to fully recover from the recession, and many are reliant on defense contracts, the state’s comparatively low taxes and abundant natural resources have helped to slow losses,” says Tom Dubin, President of the 102-year old industrial publisher.
According to MNI, employment in transportation equipment declined 1.4% in Maine over the year. Transportation equipment ranks first in the state for industrial employment, employing 9,711.
Other sectors reporting losses included food products, down 4.3%; paper products, down 1.9%; stone/clay/glass, down 1.7%; and electronics, down 1.6%.
Gains were reported in seafood processing, up 4.3%; and chemicals, up 3.4%.

Bath remains the state’s top city for manufacturing employment, with 5,380 jobs, up 5.9%. Portland ranks second with 4,813, down 6.4%. Westbrook is home to 3,323 industrial workers, virtually unchanged over the year.
