Manufacturers’ News, Inc. — Industrial employment in New York State declined 1.2% over the past twelve months according to the 2014 New York Manufacturers Register^®, an industrial directory and database published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports New York lost 8,977 manufacturing jobs from September 2012 to September 2013.

Manufacturers’ News reports New York is now home to 16,507 manufacturers employing 724,767 workers.

According to MNI, losses were spread out across most sectors and included transportation equipment, down 11.6%; furniture/fixtures, down 8.2%; rubber/plastics, down 3%; textiles/apparel, down 2.5%; lumber/wood, down 1.8%; paper products, down 1.7%; food products, also down 1.7%; and fabricated metals, down 1.4%. Only two sectors posted significant gains: stone/clay/glass, up 3%; and chemicals, up 1.2%.

Industrial locations announcing closures included Sikorsky’s facility in Horseheads; Petri’s Baking Products in Silver Creek; Cryovac’s food packaging plant in Gates; and a Deltacraft Paper location in Buffalo.

“Manufacturers in New York have yet to fully recover from the recession, and few states have a higher tax burden,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, with its educated workforce and access to capital, the state has maintained its reputation as an ideal location for innovative start-ups.”

MakerBot and Shapeways started up 3-D printing facilities in New York over the year and biotech company Regeneron announced an expansion of its facility in Tarrytown. Other bright spots for the state included the opening of Urban Electric Power’s battery manufacturing site in West Harlem; the expansion of a Byrne Dairy facility in DeWitt; and the expansion of Xerox’s facility in Webster.

MNI reports printing/publishing accounts for the most industrial employment in the state with 116,987 jobs, down a half percent over the year. Second-ranked industrial machinery and equipment accounts for 78,686 jobs, with no significant change reported. Third-ranked electronics represents 71,269 of the state’s industrial jobs, virtually unchanged over the survey period.

Manufacturers’ News reports the New York Metro Area, including the New York City exurbs, accounts for 392,667 manufacturing jobs, down 1% over the past twelve months. The Western region of the state accounts for the second-most industrial jobs with 185,297 industrial jobs, down 2.4%. Rochester and Buffalo represent 37% of these jobs, with Rochester home to 45,380 workers, down 1.2% over the year and Buffalo home to 22,830, down a half percent. Central New York is home to 97,457 industrial workers, up a half percent, while the Upstate/Adirondack region accounts for 49,346 of the state’s jobs, down 1.9% over the past twelve months.
