The U.S. Government Printing Office reports that the mobile application it developed for this year’s release of the 2013 Federal Budget proposal to Congress drew 53,000 visits in the first 24 hours of being posted — a surprising volume given the arcane nature and scope of the annual budget document.

The GPO application, available at http://m.gpo.gov/budget, features mobile friendly text versions of the president’s budget message, along with additional commentaries on building the economy, cutting waste, reducing the deficit and investing in the future. Keep reading →

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has provided support to the Library of Congress (LOC) in the creation of a new iPad app that provides users with mobile access to the daily Congressional Record.

The app was requested by the House of Representatives Committee on House Administration. The Congressional Record is the official compilation of the proceedings and debates of Congress. GPO makes this publication available everyday that Congress is in session in print form and in digital form on the agency’s Federal Digital System (FDsys). Keep reading →

The Defense Information Systems Agency has opened a program office to manage Defense Department mobile devices and the applications that run on them, according to David Bennett, DISA’s acting component acquisition executive.

The new agency will also run an online store providing DOD users with applications and mobile device management (MDM) services, Bennett said, according to a Jan. 27 report by Government Computer News. FAA Mobile is an easy-to-use mobile website that provides quick access to popular FAA.gov tasks for aviation enthusiasts on-the-go. The Federal Aviation Administration developed the mobile website because they noticed an increase in mobile traffic to their website.

FAA Mobile works on a number of devices. Users can look up airport status and delays, read aviation news and the FAA’s Flight Standards District Office “lookup” allows users to opt into location services to determine the office closest to their location. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will save thousands of dollars by trading its fleet of BlackBerries for iPhones and iPads in the next few months.

CIO Joseph Klimavicz told Breaking Gov the change, expected to take place by June 1, would save substantial costs associated with managing BlackBerry devices. He declined to specify savings other than to say it would be “thousands of dollars” now spent on managing close to 3,000 devices. Keep reading →
