The Homeland Security Department plans to migrating to mobile devices and advance information sharing as part of updates to law enforcement technology, Federal Computer Week has reported.

CIO Richard Spires said the department has set up a joint program office for law enforcement agents to swap tactical radios (such as the one pictured above) for modern smart phones within five years. Keep reading →


White House officials confirmed that President Obama today is appointing Todd Park as the new U.S. Chief Technology Officer, stepping into the position formerly held by Aneesh Chopra.

Park will have “the important task of applying the newest technology and latest advances to make the Federal government work better for the American people,” said John P. The Department of Health and Human Services is working to carry out a key piece of the Health Reform law that requires insurance companies to pay rebates to consumers if most of their premiums aren’t spent on their health care.

The law requires insurance companies to spend at least 80 percent of a consumer’s premium on the customer’s medical care, rather than administrative costs or advertising. Large insurance companies have to dedicate 85 percent of a consumer’s premium to medical coverage. Keep reading →
