E-Government Improves While Search Engines Fall Short

Two separate, recently released surveys of the quality of federal government Web sites and e-government found some striking strengths in performance, including in comparison with private-sector sites. But they also revealed shortcomings in key areas, such as search engine capability.

The U.S. E-Government Website Quality Report, by ActiveStandards and WelchmanPierpont, gave government sites relatively high marks for accessibility and usability. The report also cited a majority of sites performed poorly in search engine optimization. Keep reading →

FAA Inspectors Test iPads

As part of a plan to upgrade technology and support a mobile workforce, Federal Aviation Administration inspectors are taking part in a pilot project using iPads to conduct safety checks on airline carriers.

COMMENTARY: For quite some time now, Americans have been hearing about the dire state of infrastructure in the US. It’s clear that traditional sources of funding new projects and repairs are struggling to keep the nation’s infrastructure from falling apart, let alone thrive. What isn’t as clear is how to fix it.

OPM’s New CTO Brings Program Management Skills To Ailing Systems

The Office of Personnel Management has brought in a 25-year IT veteran, David Bowen, to serve as its new chief technology officer, an OPM spokeswoman confirmed today. His mission is to concentrate on the agency’s outdated retirement system and ensure that its new governmentwide hiring site, USAJobs.gov, continues to function properly after a rocky start in October.

Bowen, who until earlier this month had been the Federal Aviation Administration’s CIO and Assistant Administrator, will be working as a detailee with OPM’s CIO, Matt Perry, in an effort to tackle a growing backlog retiree applications. Keep reading →
