From developing a foot and mouth disease vaccine to simulating nuclear explosions, government leaders shared examples on Tuesday of how science advances government missions during a panel discussion at the annual Federal Senior Management Conference in Cambridge, Maryland.

The discussion, which included executives from the Government Accountability Office, the Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security and NASA and was led by FedInsider Executive Editor Tom Temin, offered a glimpse into the range and power of science in the federal government. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Deputy Director for Policy Tom Kalil outlined ambitious goals that are achieved by advancing science, technology and innovation on Thursday, according to the White House blog.

During his presentation at the Grand Innovation Challenges of the 21st Century event in Washington, DC., he made the case for an “all hands on deck” effort to set and meet Grand Challenges that involves government, the private sector, philanthropists, and research universities. In his remarks, he also spoke of plans for a July conference on Grand Challenges-ambitious goals on a national or global scale that capture the imagination and demand advances in innovation and breakthroughs in science and technology. Another in a string of top officials at the General Services Administration was placed on administrative leave Monday, four days after a video that features him joking about the lavish spending at a Las Vegas conference became public.

David Foley, deputy commissioner of the agency’s Public Buildings Service, was placed on leave pending disciplinary review for his conduct at the Western Regions Conference in 2010, the Washington Post reported. Foley appears prominently in the six-minute video clip (pictured right in screen shot above) released last week, which won top prize in a talent contest among employees who attended the four-day event in October 2010. Foley rewarded the employee who stars in the video, 28-year-old Hank Terlaje (pictured left in screen shot above). Terlaje raps in sunglasses about the government tab – $823,000 – to entertain 300 employees at the luxury M Resort Spa Casino. He brags that he will “never be under investigation” for the excess.
