That’s a 300% increase from three years ago, according to Forrester Consulting, which conducted the study for Unisys.

VA To Unplug Employees Who Skip Cybersecurity Training

The Department of Veterans Affairs will lock employees out of its networks if they fail to take the required yearly cybersecurity and privacy training on time – 365 days after their last refresher course.

VA CIO Roger Baker announced the policy last week to button down security and privacy on the VA’s internal and external internet sites that have been hit by security breaches and privacy violations – both internal and external – on a regular basis. NASA Beams Space Data To Your iPad Via New Mobile App

Armchair NASA fans, as well as science enthusiasts, will appreciate NASA’s latest mobile app –the Visualization Explorer App –which takes the stunning and beautiful Earth science visualizations captured from NASA’s fleet of research spacecraft and puts them directly into peoples’ hands.

“NASA satellites beam data from space; now the agency is beaming it straight to your iPad,” said media specialists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in releasing the new iPad app yesterday. GPO Migrating Data To Increase Reach, Enable Mobile Technologies

Though historically a place where ink meets paper, the Government Printing Office now produces nearly all of the country’s most important documents in digital form and is currently pursuing technologies to broaden its reach across agencies and to the public.

Chief Technology Officer Richard Davis said efforts are under way to migrate troves of digital information in the Federal Digital System created in 2006 to Extensible Markup Language (XML). The first of which was the fiscal 2013 budget released Monday via a collection of documents published by GPO. The rest of GPO’s data will migrate during fiscal 2012. The move will essentially allow users to use and pass on the information more easily and could eventually allow GPO to generate revenue through new digital products. Keep reading →

What Kind of Tree Is That? Smithsonian App Can Tell You

The Leafsnap app allows a user to identify a species of tree just by submitting a photograph of a tree’s leaf. The app utilizes visual recognition software and was developed via partnership between the Smithsonian Institution and researchers from Columbia University and the University of Maryland.

Leafsnap, available for the iPhone and the iPad, uses databases for the Northeastern United States but will eventually expand to the whole continental United States. Keep reading →
