White House Names New Cybersecurity Chief

The White House moved quickly Thursday to name Michael Daniel as President Obama’s cybersecurity adviser to replace retiring Howard Schmidt.

Daniel assumed the key position immediately as Congress and the White House continue to spar over how best to protect critical U.S. industries from crippling cyberattacks. He served for 17 years in the Office of Management and Budget’s National Security Division and worked for the past 10 years on cybersecurity as chief of the Intelligence Branch. Keep reading →

White House Cyber Chief Lays Out New Priorities

White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt has announced three priority areas where federal departments and agencies “need to focus their cybersecurity activity” –and a new set of cyber security goals to be reached by 2014.

Schmidt, in a White House blog posted Friday, said his office has recognized “the challenge of knowing which (types of technology and talent) will be most effective when dealing with advanced adversaries, especially in a limited budget environment.” Keep reading →
