Government Releases New Tool For Accessing Electricity Data

The U.S. Energy Information Administration, which collects, analyzes, and disseminates much of the nation’s independent energy information, is making its data available to the public through a new online service for the first time that will allow developers to capture and present electricity data on the web and through mobile applications.

The new application programming interface (API), will give developers access to data on electricity generation, retail sales, and average prices, and the types of fuel that are used to generate electricity at the state and national levels, according to EIA’s Mark Elbert. Electricity generation and fuel consumption data for individual power plants with more than 1 megawatt of capacity also are available. Keep reading →

DOE Wants Big Data To Mix, Blend Information For Users

Big data can mean a lot of things to different federal agencies. To the Department of Energy, big data not only means managing an information sharing network to promote big science, but also making the results of that research available to the public.

This information can be blended together in a variety of ways, depending on the end users’ needs, explained Robert Bectel, CTO and senior policy advisor at the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Speaking at a recent federal IT event, he explained that as one of the department’s technology evangelists, his goal is to make sure that taxpayers get the most out of their money by allowing federal workers to do the most on the job. Executive Broadband Order Fires Up Agencies

Federal agencies are quickly working to make it cheaper and faster for private companies to build broadband services along government property in every part of the United States under orders from President Obama.

Obama’s June 13 executive order directed agencies that are landlords managing federal properties and highways to streamline the application process and make it easier to lay down broadband wiring on or near federal property in the next six months to a year.
