Coal Mine Expansion Threatens Villages

Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– For a fourth straight year, industrial employment in South Dakota posted a gain, reports the 2015 South Dakota Manufacturers Register ®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to data collected by MNI, South Dakota manufacturers added 1,962 industrial jobs from December 2013 to December 2014, a 4% increase, more than double the 1.7% national average gain reported by the Labor Department for the same time period.

Manufacturers’ News reports South Dakota is now home to 1,339 manufacturers employing 50,433 workers. South Dakota’s 4% employment increase was the largest reported by MNI among Midwest and Plains states in 2014, surpassing North Dakota for the first time in several years.

“Investment in South Dakota’s industrial sector continues to pick up speed,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state boasts one of the top tax climates in the U.S., and its expanding food processing industry has increased investment and boosted employment.”

According to Manufacturers’ News, gains were led by the food products industry, which posted a 10% rise in employment in 2014. Food manufacturers in South Dakota currently account for 20% of the state’s industrial employment, with 9,860 workers.

South Dakota manufacturing employment gains were also reported in transportation equipment, up 13%; electronics, up 8.3%; industrial machinery, up 5%; stone/clay/glass, up 4.8%, and fabricated metals, up 3.4%.
