Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Industrial employment in Massachusetts posted a slight gain over the past year, reports the 2015 Massachusetts Manufacturers Register®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, Massachusetts manufacturers added 1,017 jobs, or less than one percent, from August 2013 to August 2014, in contrast to the 1.3% national average gain as reported by the Labor Department for the same time period.

Manufacturers’ News reports Massachusetts is now home to 8,166 manufacturers employing 372,043 workers.

“Massachusetts’ educated labor pool, access to capital and stronghold in innovative technologies, particularly, in pharmaceuticals continues to draw some investment and support industrial growth,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, high business costs have kept Massachusetts industry keeping pace with U.S. growth overall.”

According to the database of Massachusetts manufacturers, gains were led by the chemicals industry, which posted a 5.9% employment increase. The gain in chemicals was offset by a 1.8% loss in the medical instruments sector, which currently employs the most industrial workers in the state with 49,575 jobs.
