Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Manufacturing employment in Maryland/DC declined in the past year, reports the 2015 Maryland/DC Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, Maryland/DC lost 2,180 manufacturing jobs, or 1.1%, from June 2013 to June 2014, and is one of the few regions for which the industrial publisher has reported a loss in the past year.

Manufacturers’ News reports Maryland/DC is now home to 4,502 manufacturers employing 181,663 workers.

According to the database of Maryland/DC manufacturers, printing and publishing ranks as the region’s top sector by employment with 31,008 jobs, down 7.5%. Electronics ranks second with 18,565 jobs, down 5.7%. Third-ranked industrial machinery accounts for 17,980 jobs, down 2.8% over the year.

“Defense Department cuts and global competition have affected many manufacturing companies in Maryland/DC,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, given its educated labor pool and focus on research and development, the state remains an ideal location for advanced manufacturing initiatives.”

Other manufacturing sectors cutting jobs in Maryland/DC included stone/clay/glass, down 4%; rubber/plastics, down 2.4%; and furniture/fixtures, down 2.1%. Gains were seen in chemicals, up 1.8%; and fabricated metals, up 1.2%.

Manufacturing companies in Baltimore employ 30,995 workers, down 1.7% over the year. Jobs in Washington, DC declined 2.1%; rose 4.5% in Columbia; and climbed 3.3% in Linthicum.
