Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– For a third straight year, industrial employment in Texas posted a gain, reports the 2014 Texas Manufacturers Register®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, Texas manufacturers added 31,198 industrial jobs, a 2.5% increase, from May 2013 to May 2014.

Manufacturers’ News reports Texas is now home to 22,567 manufacturers employing 1,236,617 workers.

“Manufacturing is booming in Texas, particularly in oil and gas extraction and chemical production,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state’s low business taxes, access to capital, and focus on innovation have ranked it among the top places to do business.”

According to the database of Texas manufacturers, gains were led by the oil and gas industry, which posted an employment increase of 10.7%. Oil and gas extraction now ranks second in Texas for industrial jobs, employing 133,448.

Other sectors adding jobs included chemicals, up 4.4%; instruments/related products, up 3.7%; and transportation equipment, up 2.2%. Losses were reported in lumber/wood, down 4.1%; and food products, down 2.5%.

Manufacturing companies in Houston employ 261,900 workers, up 4.7% over the year. Jobs in Dallas decreased 1.5%; fell 1.7% in San Antonio and rose 3.1% in Austin. Southeast Texas accounts for the most industrial employment, with 527,838 jobs, up 5.2% over the year.
