San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed has made headlines with his proposed pension reform initiative that would allow local governments to negotiate changes to government employees’ retirement benefits.

However, the most recent stories in the media were not good news: Reed sued Attorney General Kamala Harris over the title and summary she assigned to the initiative, but a judge upheld it, making it unlikely that Reed’s initiative will qualify for the ballot this year.

Still, the second-term mayor says he and other mayors who support the initiative are not giving up on their efforts to scale back public employee pensions. On Thursday, April 3, Reed will join a Sacramento Press Club lunch to discuss his proposal and why he believes it is critical for local governments and their budgets.
