Manufacturers’ News, Inc./– Following eleven years of decline, manufacturing employment in Vermont posted a gain, reports the 2014 Vermont Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory and database published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, manufacturers in Vermont added 539 jobs from Dec. 2012 to Dec. 2013, or 1.2%, the first time MNI recorded a gain for the state since 2001.

Manufacturers’ News reports Vermont is now home to 1,414 manufacturers employing 43,260 workers.

According to MNI, gains were seen across a variety of sectors with rubber/plastics up 8.2%; chemicals, up 2.4%; lumber up 1.9%; and transportation equipment up 1.5%. Vermont’s top sectors by employment remain electronics, with 7,091 jobs and food products, employing 5,244. Both saw a half percent rise in employment.

“Vermont benefits from a diverse manufacturing sector, with significant strongholds in industries such as food products, electronics, and chemicals,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The ‘Made in Vermont’ brand resonates across the world, and exports have risen accordingly.”

Losses were reported in fabricated metals, down 6.5%; textiles/apparel, down 6.2%; and paper products, down 2.6%.

Most of Vermont’s top cities by manufacturing employment saw increases over the year. Jobs in Bennington rose 7.9%; rose 7% in Burlington; 6.2% in South Burlington; and 1.8% in Brattleboro.
