The latest annual survey of federal employees, conducted by the Office of Personnel Management, finds that there are at least a dozen federal agencies where half or more of employees now telework to some extent.

But many barriers remain, despite various efforts to promote telework. As a result, only about 20 percent of federal employees government wide report they are teleworking.

Agencies, however, have a big incentive to keep pushing. The General Services Administration estimates that if federal workers telecommuted at least one day per week, federal agencies could increase productivity by more than $2.3 billion annually. Agencies could also save potentially billions more on office space, electricity and supplies.
